Baabe on Rügen, a Baltic Sea spa town, has been awarded the ECARF Seal of Quality for allergy friendliness for the third time. The seal is a distinction from European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) granted to the municipality for addressing the special needs of allergy sufferers. Baabe was already the first municipality in Germany to receive this distinction in 2008.

“Tourists with allergies are an important and constant demographic in the tourism sector”, says Uta Donner, tourism director of the Baabe Baltic Sea spa health resort administration. “In Germany there are now many places for visitors to stay, but most of them cannot compare, nor have they been independently evaluated for suitability for allergy sufferers”, explains Donner. “The ECARF seal is based on medically supported, transparent criteria that both tourists and service providers can understand. This concept has proven itself and been copied by other allergy-friendly municipalities.”

Baabe’s infrastructure is set up in such a way that allergy sufferers can spend their holidays there with few complications. Accommodations providers, cafes and supermarkets have included allergy-friendly options within their range of goods in line with the ECARF criteria. Furthermore, hotel and restaurant staff has received special training and are qualified to provide relevant information. The ECARF Seal of Quality is prominently displayed, allowing guests to recognise participating businesses.

Apart from Baabe auf Rügen, the following municipalities and regions are also certified as allergy friendly: Bad Hindelang in the Allgäu; the ‘Ferienland Schwarzwald’ network (Holiday Region in the Black Forest) with the municipalities of Triberg, Schonach, Schönwald, Furtwangen and St. Georgen; the North Sea island of Borkum and Schmallenberg, Sauerland.
