The European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF) has awarded the North Sea island of Borkum the certificate for allergy friendliness. Borkum is the first island to adapt its tourism infrastructure to the medical and scientific criteria of the ECARF for the needs of allergy sufferers.

At the time of certification, 116 lodgings with 1,822 beds and 21 other businesses including cafés, supermarkets, bakers, butchers, beauty salons, a youth hostel and two ferries with on-board restaurants were already taking part.

“Many of the 25 million allergy sufferers in Germany already spend a lot of their vacation time on our island”, says Stefan Krieger, tourism director of Wirtschaftsbetriebe der Stadt NSHB Borkum GmbH (utilities services for the city of Borkum). “With its ocean climate, Borkum already offers natural conditions that are beneficial to allergy sufferers. Our new network of allergy-friendly hotels, holiday flats, shops and restaurants now provides many more attractions for allergy sufferers and their families and enhances their well-being during their stay on Borkum.”

“We're taking part!” was the prevailing attitude as participating service providers took measures over the past several months to gradually implement the ECARF criteria. The companies and their employees received several training courses from a team of allergists showing them how a high level of allergy friendliness could be achieved with little complexity and at a relatively low cost. Allergy-friendly lodgings provide a smoke-free and pet-free room, floor surfaces that are either uncarpeted or covered with a short-pile carpet and cleaned regularly with a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA 13 filter. Mite-proof protective covers for mattresses and bedding can be provided on request. Businesses that offer guests food take care to ensure that options are also available that are free from the most common allergy-causing foods such as nuts, eggs and celery. A detailed list of ingredients can be provided on request. The ECARF Seal of Quality is prominently displayed so that guests can identify the participating businesses.
