D. Alfons Zeller (Vorsitzender des Tourismusverbandes Allgäu/Bayerisch-Schwaben), Maximilian Hillmeier (Kurdirektor Bad Hindelang)

The European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation honours the holiday destination with the ECARF Seal of Quality as part of a nation-wide pilot project.

The Allgäu community of Bad Hindelang was certified in an official ceremony today with the ECARF Seal of Quality from the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation for its orientation toward the needs of allergic persons. The certification took place as the result of a nation-wide pilot project, "Development of Guidelines and Certification of Allergy Friendly Communities", sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. Dr. Gerd Müller, Parliamentary State Secretary for the Ministry, praised the pilot project as innovative and forward-looking.

"In Bad Hindelang, allergic persons are provided with excellent conditions for a pleasant visit", said Prof. Dr. med. Torsten Zuberbier, head of the ECARF foundation. "The network of allergy-friendly service providers significantly improves quality of life for allergy sufferers who spend their holidays in Bad Hindelang. In addition, due to the high altitude, the air at this health resort town is extremely low in pollen and mould spores and free of dust mites."

More than 70 businesses in Bad Hindelang have become part of the initiative, under the motto, "We’re joining in!" Hotels and pensions as well as restaurants, bakeries, butchers, cafés and supermarkets have implemented specific sanctions in the past months according to guidelines developed by the foundation according to the most recent scientific findings. In several training sessions, a team of researchers from ECARF informed the staff of interested businesses about simple and inexpensive ways to orient their services toward the needs of allergic consumers. For example, allergy-friendly accommodations offers rooms in which smoking and pets are prohibited, with hypoallergenic flooring and mite-proof encasings for mattresses and bedclothes. Participating restaurants offer dishes and menus free of common allergy-triggering ingredients such as nuts, eggs and celery, and can provide detailed ingredient lists upon request. Visitors can recognize participating businesses by the prominently visible ECARF Seal of Quality.

In order to determine the effects of certification on the community and on visitors, and to motivate other resort communities to address the needs of allergic visitors as well, the project is being documented by researchers. In the year 2008, the town of Baabe on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen was designated the first allergy-friendly municipality worldwide by the ECARF foundation as part of a pilot project. Allergies are the most common chronic illness in Europe. Approximately every second family contains at least one allergy sufferer, but 90% of all those afflicted receive either inadequate medical treatment or no treatment at all.
